Black beans – Healthy heart, slim figure after fifty!

Black beans support the heart, intestines, and hormonal balance of women over 50. They are inexpensive, nutritious, and surprisingly delicious.

Proč by černé fazole měla jíst právě žena po padesátce? Černé fazole podporují srdce, střeva i hormonální rovnováhu žen po 50. Jsou levné, výživné a překvapivě chutné.

Why should women over 50 eat black beans?

Things start to happen after you turn 50. Digestion slows down, weight gain accelerates, blood sugar levels fluctuate, and joints need attention more often. This is when black beans can help as a simple, inexpensive, and naturally functional superfood.

In this article, you will learn what black beans contain, how they affect the health of women over 50, and why it is worth including them in your diet regularly.

My experience: beans are a salvation for digestion and a sweet tooth!

I was still looking for something that would work for me. After my third diet and another useless detox, I tried a simple thing: I started eating black beans.

Surprisingly, they relieved my bloating, stabilized my sugar levels (and sweet cravings!), and even improved my hair and skin. Sometimes the answer is really simple.

Why are black beans such a treasure (and not only) for Big Girls...

1. They are loaded with protein

They help maintain muscle mass, which rapidly decreases after age 50. One cup of black beans contains over 15 g of plant-based protein.

2. High fiber content = better digestion

More than 15 g of fiber per serving helps not only with constipation, but also with bloating, appetite, and supports healthy intestinal microflora.

3. Stabilize blood sugar levels

Thanks to their low glycemic index and combination of complex carbohydrates and fiber, they are also suitable for diabetics. No sugar fluctuations = no hunger pangs.

4. They support a healthy heart and blood vessels

They contain antioxidants, magnesium, folic acid and soluble fiber, which helps reduce the level of "bad" cholesterol.

5. They relieve menopause and care for the kidneys

According to traditional Chinese medicine, they nourish yin and blood, promote urination, and benefit the kidneys. They are useful for exhaustion or hormonal imbalance.

6. Beautiful skin, hair and nails

Thanks to the B vitamins they contain (mainly niacin and pantothenic acid), they support skin regeneration and hair health.

How to Include Black Beans in Your Diet (Even If You Don't Have Time)

  • Use them as a spread base (mix with garlic and lemon)
  • In soup instead of thickening
  • With rice as a quick lunch (adds protein)
  • Like a bean salad with onion, pepper and a little olive oil
  • Or feel free to hide them in brownies – they really work!

🌿 Use herbs and a drop of oil

If you find yourself in a situation where you don't have time to soak them, add some herbs and a few drops of oil to the cooked legumes. They will not only aid digestion, but also act as an excellent prevention against bloating and often shorten the cooking time.

Herbs against flatulence that work and you have them at home (or in the store):

🌿 Caraway seeds

A classic, but rightly so – it helps digest legumes, reduces cramps and flatulence.
👉 Throw 1-2 teaspoons into the water you cook the beans in.
You can also use it in oil at the beginning of cooking (stir fry, then add the onion).

🌿 Saturated fat

Often overlooked, but great. In old cookbooks right „"herb against flatulence"“.
👉 Goes well with beans, peas and lentils. 1 teaspoon dried in water or directly into food.

🌿 Marjoram

Not just for mashed potatoes – it has a calming effect on the intestines.
👉 Add it to ready-made bean soup or spread - it will add flavor and relieve your stomach.

🌿 Fennel seeds

Light anise flavor + strong anti-flatulence effect.
👉 You can cook it with beans or add it to an oil-based base. It's also great in tea after a meal.

🌿 Thyme

It supports digestion, but is gentle. It is suitable for soups, ragouts and spreads.
👉 Try the combination of thyme + garlic + lemon - for both taste and effect.

These herbs will not only soothe digestion, but they will also add a beautiful flavor – and your body will thank you.

🥤 Drink during meals (but smartly)

Beans are full of fiber—and fiber needs water to function properly. Drinking it will help your intestines move and detoxify.

💡 Fresh vegetable juices are ideal:

  • cucumber
  • celery
  • carrot
  • or from beetroot

They contain enzymes that facilitate digestion and prevent bloating.

Bonus: Combinations that work great

  • Cumin + marjoram → a classic that never disappoints
  • Fennel + savory → fresh, a little different and effective
  • Thyme + garlic + a drop of lemon → smells great, digests well

If you want extra softness for your belly:

Add to cooking beans a piece of kombu seaweed (can also be purchased at DM or health food stores) – helps break down indigestible sugars that cause bloating. But it is not necessary – Herbs are enough for you.

🌿 Epazote

What is it:

  • A Mexican herb with a distinctive, slightly licorice-like and medicinal flavor.
  • In traditional Mexican cuisine, it is added to beans to reduced bloating and improved digestion.

Where to get:

  • In the Czech Republic it's more of a specialty – they sometimes have it ethnic shops, Mexican e-shops, or as dried herb on iHerb, Amazon etc.
  • Under its Czech name it is sometimes referred to as „"Jesuit" or "Mexican oregano"“, but BEWARE – that's something else. Search directly the name Epazote.

Recommendation:
❗More of an exotic curiosity – unless you're a fan of Mexican cuisine, you don't have to look for it. The Czech Republic has its own "herbal weapons" that work just as well.

🌿 Asafoetida (hing)

What is it:

  • Spices used mainly in Indian and Ayurvedic cuisine.
  • It has a strong aroma (reminiscent of garlic and onion combined) and in small amounts helps digest legumes and reduce bloating.
  • In India, it is used instead of onions and garlic during fasting – so it is really effective.

Where to get:

Note:
✔️ Used literally a pinch – just dissolve in oil at the beginning of cooking.
✔️ Great if you love Indian cuisine or have an extremely sensitive stomach.
❌ But if that's enough for you marjoram, cumin and fennel, you'll be fine.

Summary for Big Girl's Kitchen:

✅ If you cook Czech or Mediterranean → cumin, savory, marjoram, fennel you are completely enough.
🧪 If you like trying new flavors and aromas → asafoetida you might enjoy it.
🌵 Epazote It's more for connoisseurs – it's not common in Czech cuisine.
