Mitochondria: How to get more energy and slow down aging

Discover how to support your mitochondria – the cellular powerhouses of your body. More energy, better health, slower aging. Read on!

Mitochondria …

… are not just ordinary cell organelles – they are the powerhouses of our body. Every cell in the body (with the exception of red blood cells) is equipped with these miniature energy factories that determine how we feel, how well we age and whether we have enough strength for everyday life. When mitochondria do not function properly, fatigue occurs, we age faster and even develop diseases of civilization. So, how can we kick-start our mitochondria and get maximum energy? Read on! 🚀

What are mitochondria and why do they matter?

Mitochondrie nejsou jen obyčejné buněčné organely – jsou to elektrárny našeho těla.

Mitochondria are the cellular powerhouses that produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) – the molecule that supplies the body with energy. The more efficiently mitochondria work, the more energy we have available for regeneration, brain function, physical activity and the immune system.

Each cell contains hundreds to thousands of mitochondria – the heart, brain and muscles have the most because they need huge amounts of energy.

Interestingly, mitochondria have their own DNA that comes only from the mother. So our energy efficiency is largely determined by our mother's genes! 😲

Mitochondria and Aging: What Happens with Age

As we age, mitochondria weaken and their efficiency decreases.

The result is:

  • Less energy – feeling tired, weak, lower performance.
  • Slowed regeneration – poorer wound healing, slower recovery after exercise.
  • Susceptibility to diseases – weakened immunity, higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Faster aging – wrinkles, deterioration of muscle tone, loss of vitality.

The good news? Mitochondria can be repaired and strengthened! 💪

How to strengthen mitochondria and feel better

1. Nutrition: Quality Fuel for Cellular Power Plants

Mitochondria need antioxidants and healthy fats to function properly.

  • 🥑 Healthy fats – avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts.
  • 🥩 Quality proteins – eggs, free-range meat, fish.
  • 🥬 Vegetables rich in antioxidants – leafy greens, broccoli, blueberries.
  • 🍫 Polyphenols – dark chocolate, turmeric, green tea.

2. Ketones and fasting

Mitochondria love ketones – a cleaner and more efficient source of energy than glucose. The ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting (e.g. 16:8) promote autophagy, the natural recycling of cells.

3. Hardening and cold therapy ❄

Short-term exposure to cold stimulates the production of new mitochondria. Cold showers, ice baths, or just wiping yourself down with a damp towel in the morning – try whatever you can.

4. HIIT and strength training 🏋️‍♀️

silový či kruhový trénink

Short, high-intensity intervals promote the growth of new mitochondria. Just 15 minutes 2-3 times a week is enough. Consider brisk walking uphill, sprints, or circuit training. Oh yes girls… dumbbells and muscles!!!

5. Quality sleep 😴

Mitochondria are mainly repaired during sleep. We need at least 7-9 hours of restful, deep sleep. Air out your bedroom, dim the lights, put away your cell phone – your cells will thank you.

6. Sun and infrared therapy ☀

Sunlight supports the production of coenzyme Q10. Infrared saunas or special light therapies can be a great addition.

7. Dietary supplements 💊

Some supplements help mitochondria function better:

  • ✔ Coenzyme Q10 – protects against oxidative stress.
  • ✔ PQQ – stimulates the growth of new mitochondria.
  • ✔ L-carnitine – transports fats to the mitochondria.
  • ✔ Resveratrol – supports cell regeneration.
  • ✔ Magnesium – essential for ATP production.

Scientific studies confirm the effect of some supplements – read more at PubMed.

Mitochondria are the foundation of energy, health, and longevity. Taking care of them will pay off in vitality and a better mood.

Thank you.

[…] 👉 When autophagy works properly, mitochondria are healthy, efficient, and produce more energy (ATP). On the other hand, damaged mitochondria lead to fatigue, inflammation, and faster aging. Learn more about mitochondria here! […]
