That moment when I feel something approaching. Spring is not here yet, but the air already has a different taste. And it is precisely to this moment between what was and what is yet to come that Carnival belongs... It&#039;s because of that feeling of last joy before peace. As if you&#039;ve indulged in all the good things once more before the time comes for silence and contemplation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So \u2013 From now until February 18th, we&#039;re going bombs<\/strong> \u2013 good food, drink and a carnival that is sure to please. Mark the weekend of February 14-15, it will be the absolute highlight! Our ancestors knew it \u2013 just enjoy yourself before the forty days of fasting. Eat, drink, laugh\u2763<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shrove Tuesday ends on February 17. Then comes Ash Wednesday (February 18) and everything stops. We all huddled around the stove, waiting for something to pop onto the plate. God bless. Bacon spread on fresh bread. Pork knuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may sound difficult today. But back then \u2013 and actually still now \u2013 it was a ritual. A meal together. A moment together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that feeling can be brought back. Just open the window, let in the February air, and turn on the oven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-bf9e2ac2\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Masquerade, bear and a little wildness<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first time I went to a carnival parade, I was fifty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yeah, really. I never thought of it before. But my friend said: Let&#039;s go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kudyznudy.cz\/aktivity\/expozice-masopustnich-masek-a-obchuzek-z-hlinecka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">to Hlinsko<\/a>, she can do it there. And she was right. I saw a bear on a rope. A bear in a fur coat. Masks that looked like they came out of old fairy tales \u2013 old women with a litter, horses, clowns. And that sound! Wooden clappers, laughter, music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UNESCO has put it on the list of masterpieces. But I remembered something else \u2013 how people laugh. How they take their time to be silly. How they stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s the beauty of Mardi Gras. It&#039;s not perfect. It&#039;s not polished. It&#039;s just alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e346a2fd\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">What comes after Carnival?<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-fb0c72a0\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Ash Wednesday February 18<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> sounds strict \u2013 and once it really was. Ashes on the forehead. The words \u201edust you are and to dust you shall return.\u201c Fasting, silence, no meat. Our grandmothers were not allowed to sew, pluck feathers or chop wood. Otherwise, they say\u2026 fleas, lame cows, frogs in flax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, most of us don&#039;t observe this anymore. But perhaps some of that peace could remain, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#039;ve discovered that fasting doesn&#039;t have to be about giving up. It can be about inner cleansing. It can be about allowing yourself to be quiet. It can be about stopping for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-c3579d3c\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">My favorite Lenten Sunday<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The six Sundays between Shrovetide and Easter have their own names. And I have my favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-0274450b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Fox Sunday \u2013 February 22nd.<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mothers baked pretzels at night and hung them on trees in the garden. In the morning they told the children: This is from the fox. The children prayed, ate them \u2013 and they said they didn&#039;t have any toothaches for a whole year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn&#039;t that a wonderful story?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tried it last year. Not because of my teeth. But because of the feeling of creating something with my hands, giving something, inventing something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fox pretzels. Warm, crispy, and fragrant with caraway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-1890afc5\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">And then there is Dead Sunday \u2013 March 22nd.<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p> Here comes Morena, the straw puppet. She burns or floats away down the stream \u2013 and winter is over. Officially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#039;s exactly the moment when I say to myself: yeah, the world keeps turning. Everything passes. And that&#039;s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-aa02a154\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Carnival is not about dressing up as a bear.<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#039;s about allowing yourself to enjoy the last bit of winter to the fullest. Bake something good. Get together with friends. Laugh. And then \u2013 calmly \u2013 let the rest go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#039;m going to have a nice weekend, February 14th and 15th. Maybe I&#039;ll bake donuts. And maybe I&#039;ll go to a parade. Imagine those grandmothers jumping like crazy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-d079c1fc\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Sack Thursday<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After Shrove Tuesday, there was &quot;Sack Thursday&quot; - a day when the very last leftovers from the Shrove Tuesday feast were eaten. And why sack Thursday? &quot;Because after Shrove Tuesday, everything that is left over is eaten, digested - sacked!&quot;\u201e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e7accb34\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Baba&#039;s Mill<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, a mill was built, and on Tuesday, \u201eold women were ground into young ones.\u201c Imagine that \u2013 an ironic celebration of rejuvenation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f4a5ae8d\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">The Burial of Bacchus<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The figure of Bacchus, the &quot;lord of drunkards&quot;, was tried, condemned and punished - for example, by being thrown into a fountain in the square, burned or buried. <a href=\"https:\/\/zahratka.cz\/01\/masopustni-tradice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Garden<\/a>. Drama as embroidered!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b7ca77c1\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Parody Masses<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During Shrovetide, parody masses with ridiculous sermons, humorous skits, and satirical songs about clerics could be seen in various corners of Europe.  <strong>Medieval freedom of speech!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-8d24bec0\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Bear \u2013 the oldest mask<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The bear has been documented since at least the 6th century, but it was already used in ancient pagan times. That&#039;s more than <strong>1500 year old theater!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-3ae83678\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Jew - a caricature of a businessman<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The character of the &quot;Jew&quot; with the sack could only be played by a married and well-to-do man. He had a blackened face, a suit made of rags, feathers and money. He entertained, told stories, bargained and stole alms, grain and money. Such legal robbery!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-f7639ba4\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Mangy carnival<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If there was no wedding in the village during Shrovetide, there was talk of <strong>\u201e&quot;a dusty carnival&quot;\u201c<\/strong>. It just wasn&#039;t fun without a wedding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ee7d8711\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Rolling in the mud<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>People wearing masks climbed into a half-drained pond and rolled around in the mud \u2013 it was believed that this would bring abundant fishing in the coming year. <strong>Muddy prosperity!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-24f8b8a0\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Midnight End<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The party had to end at exactly midnight. The night watchman came, blew the horn, and the magistrate ordered everyone to disperse. As if she wanted a policeman with such authority today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-398f68fd\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Cinderella superstitions<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Ash Wednesday, women were not allowed to spin, sew, chop wood, or pluck feathers. Anyone who disobeyed would be bitten by fleas, their hens would not lay eggs, their cows would limp, and the flax in the field would be eaten by frogs. <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masopust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>. Drastic warnings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-cbd02d1a\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Wasted meals<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In some areas, women held their own celebrations known as &quot;barren feasts&quot;\u201e <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masopust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>. Women&#039;s solidarity in action!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-8bcdb151\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Men&#039;s balls<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On Shrove Monday, there were <strong>\u201e&quot;men&#039;s balls&quot;,<\/strong> where neither bachelors nor girls were allowed, only married people <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masopust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>. Exclusive married club!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-37e80e3b\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">Oldest mention<\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Word <strong>\u201e&quot;meat festival&quot;\u201c <\/strong>is already documented in Great Moravian sources from the 9th century <a href=\"https:\/\/cs.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masopust\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>. <strong>That&#039;s over 1100 years of tradition!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/en\/osobnosti-ledna-kdo-slavi-v-prvnim-mesici-roku\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Beauty, right? <\/a>\ud83d\ude0a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because Carnival reminds me: That spring is coming! Yours and mine time.
