I remember a time when it didn&#039;t exist..."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>and then for the time when downloading one image took half an hour and the characteristic sound of the modem was music to the ears \ud83d\ude02 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For our generation - the generation of big girls who have experienced the internet since its infancy - it&#039;s a nostalgic moment. Let&#039;s take a look at some interesting things that aren&#039;t seen that often these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-cfa80551\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Key dates and first steps<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First dates:<\/strong> The Internet, then still called <strong>ARPANET<\/strong>, began writing its history on October 29, 1969. The message was supposed to read &quot;LOGIN,&quot; but the system crashed after sending the letters &quot;L&quot; and &quot;O.&quot; So the first word in the history of the Internet was actually just &quot;Lo.&quot;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WWW (World Wide Web):<\/strong> Few people know that it is not the same as the Internet. The Internet is a physical network, while the WWW is a system of linked documents. The first web page was launched by <strong>Tim Berners-Lee<\/strong>  August 6, 1991. It was about the WWW project and explained how the web works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Czechoslovakia on the web:<\/strong> Our country connected to the Internet on February 13, 1992 at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The connection speed was 19.2 kb\/s. To give you an idea, downloading today&#039;s MP3 file would take hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-dd2b50c8\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>First\u2026<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the top five, it&#039;s not so easy on the internet. There is no &quot;official&quot; list, but we can take a look at some interesting firsts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First website:<\/strong> The first website at CERN (info.cern.ch) was soon followed by others. These were mainly academic sites and sites for researchers that tried to introduce new possibilities of the network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>First items sold:<\/strong> Many internet historians agree that the first thing sold on an e-commerce platform was <strong>gramophone record<\/strong> by the band Sting. It was sold in 1994 on the NetMarket website. It was then on eBay <strong>damaged laser pointers<\/strong> for $14.83 in 1995. The buyer was a collector, so it didn&#039;t matter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first internet hoaxes:<\/strong> One of the first hoaxes that still recurs today is the so-called <strong>&quot;Nigerian Prince&quot;<\/strong>, which promises huge wealth if you send a small amount to complete the transfer. This type of scam, known as <strong>&quot;Scam 419&quot;<\/strong>, appeared in emails as early as the 1990s. Other early scams included fake car sweepstakes and revealing secrets on how to \u201cget rich online.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-72fc9477\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Funny and forgotten things from the 90s<\/strong>\u2026<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dial-up connection:<\/strong> The sound of your modem trying to connect is unforgettable for many. And what about when you forgot you were online and a family member picked up the phone and the call went dead!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Visit counter:<\/strong> Every website that wanted to be &quot;modern&quot; had to have a primitive counter that showed how many times you were on the page. It was something of a status symbol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blink tag and Gif animation:<\/strong> Pages full of flashing text and tacky, constantly moving images were commonplace. The first search engines looked completely different and were more like catalogs of websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Archie (1990):<\/strong> It wasn&#039;t a website search engine (because the web didn&#039;t exist back then), but a tool for indexing files on FTP servers. Users used it to search for software.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aliweb (1993):<\/strong> It was one of the first real search engines, but its operation was quite primitive. In order for a site to appear there, site owners had to submit it and send it with a description. No robots, no automatic crawling!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Yahoo!<\/a> (1994):<\/strong> It started out as a hand-crafted catalog of websites by two Stanford students, Jerry Yang and David Filo. They called it &quot;Jerry and David&#039;s Guide to the World Wide Web.&quot; It later became a full-fledged search engine and one of the most popular companies of the 1990s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Google (1998):<\/strong> Larry Page and Sergey Brin have come up with a revolutionary new algorithm <strong>PageRank<\/strong>, which ranked pages by their importance (based on the number and quality of links pointing to them). This was the revolution that started the rise of Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-4b6bae60\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>E-commerce pioneers<\/strong>\u2026<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Amazon and Alibaba, there was online commerce, but on a rather small and primitive level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pizza Hut (1994):<\/strong> It became one of the first companies to offer <strong>online food ordering<\/strong>Their system was called PizzaNet and was a technological marvel at the time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amazon (1995):<\/strong> Jeff Bezos founded a company whose goal was to become <strong>&quot;the largest bookstore on Earth&quot;<\/strong>But he soon realized that the internet had the potential to sell anything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>eBay (1995):<\/strong> Originally titled <strong>AuctionWeb<\/strong>, was founded by Pierre Omidyar as a place to sell his fianc\u00e9e&#039;s antiques. The first listing, as we said, was a broken laser pointer. eBay popularized online auction sales.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-21d11e28\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>The first social networks<\/strong>\u2026<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#039;s giants like Facebook and Instagram had predecessors who laid the foundation for online communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Classmates.com (1995):<\/strong> The site allowed people to find their old high school and college classmates. While it wasn&#039;t a social network in the modern sense (no likes, no walls), it laid the foundation for connecting people online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Six Degrees (1997):<\/strong> It is often referred to as the first true social network. It allowed you to create profiles, friend lists, and connect with people. However, it only lasted until 2001.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is clear that many of today&#039;s services have their roots in simple ideas that have gradually developed into huge global companies. <strong>What surprised you the most about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-1f3f2cb9\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>The first computer games...<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The early internet was the Wild West \u2013 a place where digital dreams and bizarre ideas were born. While the first e-shops tried to sell pizza or books and social networks looked like chat with ugly smileys, gamers were already discovering what it was like when the digital world opened wide.<a href=\"https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/en\/co-umi-hry-s-nasim-mozkem-zdravi-pamet-a-tymovy-duch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong> What can computer games do!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image alignleft uagb-block-daf50e94 wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-left\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/pexels-photo-9071739-9071739.jpg ,https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/pexels-photo-9071739-9071739.jpg 780w, https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/pexels-photo-9071739-9071739.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 150px\" src=\"https:\/\/velkeholky.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/pexels-photo-9071739-9071739.jpg\" alt=\"Young gamer engrossed in playing video games with a neon-lit background of multiple screens.\" class=\"uag-image-4284\" width=\"151\" height=\"227\" title=\"pexels-photo-9071739-9071739\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Back then, there were no epic battles in <strong>World of Warcraft<\/strong>, that was only in 2004! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But games like <strong>Doom<\/strong> or <strong>Quake<\/strong> rewrote the rules and showed that it&#039;s best to share it with a friend online. No crowds, just you and him. A little later, titles like <strong>Ultima Online<\/strong> and <strong>EverQuest<\/strong>, which showed that the internet can be a huge playground with thousands of people at once. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a prehistoric era, full of slow connection, but with an incredible pioneering joy that extended to the phenomenon called <strong>Wow<\/strong>. So while some were learning how to order shoes, others were already slaying dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-792b5847\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">THE WHOLE ONE PERCENT IN CZECH \ud83d\ude2e<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>one percentage point of the total content of the Internet is a really huge number for Czech<\/strong>Let&#039;s look at it from different perspectives to better visualize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-b889f506\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>How much is 1 % of content?<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Global comparison:<\/strong> If you were to take the total number of Internet users in the world (which is estimated at more than 5 billion), the number of Czech users represents only a tiny fraction. Yet, content is created in Czech that is capable of filling a full one percent of the Internet. That is a huge amount of text, videos, images, pages, applications and databases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comparison with other languages:<\/strong> Many languages with much larger numbers of speakers (such as Indonesian, Bengali, or Portuguese) do not have such a digital footprint on the internet. This indicates a high <strong>digital literacy<\/strong> and <strong>activity<\/strong> Czech internet communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is this happening?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several reasons why the Czech internet scene is so rich and active:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>History and Internet access:<\/strong> The Czech Republic has a long history in IT and gained access to the internet relatively early. Compared to many other countries, the internet has spread very quickly in the Czech Republic and has become a common part of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High level of education:<\/strong> The education system in the Czech Republic emphasizes technical fields and digital skills, which supports the creation of online content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Small but compact market:<\/strong> The Czech market is large enough to make it worthwhile to create <strong>localized content<\/strong> (translated websites, apps, etc.), and at the same time small enough for creators and companies to know each other and easily collaborate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural and social openness:<\/strong> Czechs are generally not afraid to experiment with new technologies and are willing to share information and create communities online, which leads to the constant growth of content.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-94d35b01\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\">&quot;Do you also remember your first steps on the Internet? Neexistuje \u017e\u00e1dn\u00fd &#8222;ofici\u00e1ln\u00ed&#8220; seznam, ale m\u016f\u017eeme se pod\u00edvat na zaj\u00edmav\u00e9 prvotiny: Prvn\u00ed internetov\u00e9 podvody (hoaxy): Jedn\u00edm z prvn\u00edch a dodnes se vracej\u00edc\u00edch hoax\u016f je tzv. &#8222;Nigerijsk\u00fd princ&#8220;, kter\u00fd slibuje obrovsk\u00e9 bohatstv\u00ed, pokud za\u0161lete malou \u010d\u00e1stku pro vy\u0159\u00edzen\u00ed p\u0159evodu. Tento typ podvodu, zn\u00e1m\u00fd jako &#8222;Scam 419&#8220;, se objevil u\u017e v 90. letech v e-mailech. Dal\u0161\u00ed ran\u00e9 podvody byly t\u0159eba fale\u0161n\u00e9 slosov\u00e1n\u00ed o auto nebo odhalen\u00ed tajemstv\u00ed, jak &#8222;zbohatnout online&#8220;. Vtipn\u00e9 a zapomenut\u00e9 v\u011bci z 90. let&#8230; Prvn\u00ed vyhled\u00e1va\u010de&#8230; Dne\u0161n\u00ed Google zdaleka nebyl prvn\u00ed. Prvn\u00ed vyhled\u00e1vac\u00ed n\u00e1stroje vypadaly \u00fapln\u011b jinak a byly sp\u00ed\u0161e katalogy webov\u00fdch str\u00e1nek. Pr\u016fkopn\u00edci e-commerce&#8230; P\u0159ed Amazonem a Alibabou se na internetu obchodovalo, ale sp\u00ed\u0161e na mal\u00e9 a primitivn\u00ed \u00farovni. Prvn\u00ed soci\u00e1ln\u00ed s\u00edt\u011b&#8230; Dne\u0161n\u00ed giganti jako Facebook a Instagram m\u011bli sv\u00e9 p\u0159edch\u016fdce, kte\u0159\u00ed polo\u017eili z\u00e1klady pro online komunity. Je vid\u011bt, \u017ee mnoho dne\u0161n\u00edch slu\u017eeb m\u00e1 sv\u00e9 ko\u0159eny v jednoduch\u00fdch n\u00e1padech, kter\u00e9 se postupn\u011b rozvinuly do obrovsk\u00fdch glob\u00e1ln\u00edch firem. Co v\u00e1s z toho nejv\u00edce p\u0159ekvapilo? Prvn\u00ed po\u010d\u00edta\u010dov\u00e9 hry &#8230; Internet na po\u010d\u00e1tku byl divok\u00fd z\u00e1pad \u2013 m\u00edsto, kde se rodily digit\u00e1ln\u00ed sny a bizarn\u00ed n\u00e1pady. Zat\u00edmco prvn\u00ed e-shopy se sna\u017eily prod\u00e1vat pizzu nebo knihy a soci\u00e1ln\u00ed s\u00edt\u011b vypadaly jako chat s o\u0161kliv\u00fdmi smajl\u00edky, hr\u00e1\u010di u\u017e tenkr\u00e1t objevovali, jak\u00e9 to je, kdy\u017e se digit\u00e1ln\u00ed sv\u011bt otev\u0159e doko\u0159\u00e1n. Co v\u0161e um\u00ed po\u010d\u00edta\u010dov\u00e9 hry ! Tehdy je\u0161t\u011b ne\u0161lo o epick\u00e9 bitvy ve World of Warcraft, to bylo a\u017e v roce 2004! Ale hry jako Doom nebo Quake p\u0159epsaly pravidla a uk\u00e1zaly, \u017ee nejlep\u0161\u00ed je si to s kamar\u00e1dem rozdat na s\u00edti. \u017d\u00e1dn\u00e9 davy, jen ty a on. O chv\u00edli pozd\u011bji p\u0159i\u0161ly tituly jako Ultima Online a EverQuest, kter\u00e9 uk\u00e1zaly, \u017ee internet m\u016f\u017ee b\u00fdt obrovsk\u00e9 h\u0159i\u0161t\u011b s tis\u00edci lidmi najednou. Byl to prav\u011bk, pln\u00fd pomal\u00e9ho p\u0159ipojen\u00ed, ale zato s neuv\u011b\u0159itelnou pr\u016fkopnickou radost\u00ed, kter\u00e1 se t\u00e1hla a\u017e k fenom\u00e9nu zvan\u00e9mu WoWko. A tak se zat\u00edmco jedni u\u010dili, jak si objednat boty, druz\u00ed u\u017e zab\u00edjeli draky. CEL\u00c9 JEDNO PROCENTO V \u010cE\u0160TIN\u011a \ud83d\ude2e jeden procentn\u00ed bod z celkov\u00e9ho obsahu internetu je pro \u010de\u0161tinu opravdu obrovsk\u00e9 \u010d\u00edslo. Poj\u010fme se na to pod\u00edvat z r\u016fzn\u00fdch \u00fahl\u016f pohledu, abychom si to dok\u00e1zali l\u00e9pe p\u0159edstavit. Jak moc je 1 % obsahu? Pro\u010d se to d\u011bje? Existuje n\u011bkolik d\u016fvod\u016f, pro\u010d je \u010desk\u00e1 internetov\u00e1 sc\u00e9na tak bohat\u00e1 a aktivn\u00ed: \u201ePamatujete si taky na sv\u00e9 prvn\u00ed kroky na internetu?
