You may have heard or read about\u00a0Asimov's Laws of Robotics<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three rules \u2013 laws<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

invented by writer Isaac Asimov for his science fiction stories more than 80 years ago. Today, as artificial intelligence becomes part of our daily lives, these laws are coming to the fore again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why should we care?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Because they help us think about an important question: How do we ensure that technology serves us, not harms us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaac Asimov, born as Iz\u00e1k Yudovich Ozimov <\/a><\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n

(January 2, 1920, Petrovichi, Russia \u2013 April 6, 1992, New York, USA), was an American writer and biochemist of Jewish origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His work began during the Golden Age of science fiction. He won a number of prestigious awards (Hugo, Nebula, Locus, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the author of the three laws of robotics.<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What do Asimov's laws say?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. A robot may not harm a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A robot must always obey human commands (unless it violates the first rule)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. And a robot must protect itself (as long as it does not violate the first two laws)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Later he added a "zeroth law": A robot may not harm humanity as a whole.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why are these laws still important today?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The benefits that would bring<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Safety first<\/strong> \u2013 Imagine if all AI systems had a built-in duty to protect us. Your smart home would never do anything to harm you. Your car\u2019s navigation would always choose the safest route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Trust in technology<\/strong> \u2013 If you knew that AI had clear rules that it couldn't break, you might have more trust in it. Less fear of "something going wrong."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Human control<\/strong> \u2013 The AI would have to obey your commands and would never be able to \u201cdo whatever it wants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But it's not that simple...<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The problem is that in the real world, things are more complicated than in science fiction stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Where could this be problematic?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Imagine an AI that monitors your health. It detects that you often forget to take your blood pressure medication. It tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
