PROCRASTINATION AND MORE – OR HOW TO MASTERFULLY POSTPOST THINGS ;)
So, on purpose – how many times have you put off a task today? And now, hand on heart, wasn't it because "I have to make coffee first", "I'll clean up a bit first, because you can't work in a brothel", or "I'll quickly scroll through social media so I don't miss anything"? Yes? Well, welcome to the club, because you've just met our good old friend – procrastination.
1. What exactly is procrastination?
No, it's not a fatal disease. (although it may seem that way sometimes). It's just that way. harmless a tendency to put things off until later, usually in favor of activities that are much, much more “important” at the time – like sorting socks by color or researching how long turtles live (don’t worry, sea turtles can live up to 100 years, so you still have plenty of time to find out).
2. Don't confuse laziness with procrastination.
Laziness means you don't do anything because you just don't feel like it. Procrastination means you You are doing something, but something completely different than you should be doing. That's why it often happens that instead of dealing with emails, you suddenly have a great idea to start sorting through photos from your vacation five years ago. Or rearrange the spices in the kitchen. Or suddenly remember that you should learn to knit, even if you've never knitted a single stitch in your life.
3. The Five Levels of Procrastination
1️⃣ Basic level – classic procrastination: "I'll do it tomorrow." Or maybe the day after tomorrow. Maybe never. We'll see.
2️⃣ Interspatial procrastination: You start one task, but before you know it, you find yourself starting another instead. And the first one? It's still waiting.
3️⃣ Productive procrastination: Yes, you are working! But not on what you should be working on. You are working on something else, which It was also important... but... not NOW.
4️⃣ Master level procrastination: You're so far along that you're starting to plan how you're going to plan to do something.
5️⃣ Apocalyptic level: The deadline is tomorrow. You haven't done anything. Stress is at its peak. Panic. Disaster. "I'm never leaving it to the last minute again!!!" (Haha, right... until next time.)
4. How to defend against procrastination?
🛑 1. Do what you don't enjoy doing first. Instead of “I’ll have a coffee and then I’ll get to it,” try “I’ll have a coffee AFTER I do this.” And if that doesn’t help, try the five-minute rule – “OK, I’ll do this for FIVE MINUTES, and if I don’t feel like doing it anymore, I’ll stop.” And lo and behold – you usually keep going!
🛑 2. Use a to-do list. It's scientifically proven that checking off a completed task releases a small dose of happiness into your brain. So make a list and start with the worst.
🛑 3. The two-minute rule. If something takes less than two minutes, do it now. This will save you a huge amount of unfinished tasks that will gradually accumulate and turn into stressful chaos.
🛑 4. Create an environment where you are not distracted. Yes, put your phone in another room. And turn off those social media. Also close dozens of open tabs in your browser. (And no, you really don't need to have three pages of brownie recipes open at once when you're working on a presentation.)
🛑 5. Remind yourself why you're doing this. Because you have to. Because if you don't, the boss will come, there will be a deadline or unfortunate consequences. And you don't want that.
5. Conclusion?
If you're reading this article instead of doing something important – congratulations! You just procrastinated again. But don't worry, I'm not judging you. So, shall we get to the task right now? 😊
